In the United States, the use of oral Comfrey products have been restricted by the FDA because it contains toxic substances that can cause severe liver damage and in extreme cases even death.

Because of the potentially lethal side effects it is recommended that Comfrey and products containing Comfrey should never be ingested. Although common Comfrey is known to be safe, it is not possible to determine whether or not it is of the Russian Comfrey variety that is known to be highly toxic when taken internally. Under no circumstances whatsoever should pregnant or breastfeeding women use Comfrey.
