What Are Urinary Tract Infections?

Urinary Tract Infections, or UTI, are probably among the top few complaints that women are presenting when they go to emergency rooms and doctors appointments. While they are all too common, there is really no one specific cause for them. That isn’t completely true, however. We DO know that the urinary tract should be sterile and if bacteria gets in then an infection can develop. That is the final cause, but how the bacteria gets there is another question altogether.

Some bacteria are sexually transmitted as in the case of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma. These STDs can affect both men as well as women and often require a potent course of antibiotics. Other bacteria known to cause urinary and bladder infections are the infamous E. coli germs. If they escape from the digestive tract and infiltrate the urethra, then an infection can quickly occur because the urinary tract is usually in a sterile condition.

Other than the UTIs brought about by sexual activity, there are natural ways to treat and cure them. Cranberry juice is highly effective in treating and preventing them by preventing bacteria from attaching to the lining of the urinary tract. It is also used successfully to cleanse the kidneys. Vitamin C restores an acidic balance in which bacterial growth is inhibited.

Drink plenty of fresh water to keep your urinary tract flushed and if you feel you are getting a UTI, mix a teaspoon or two of baking soda into your water. This will also help to restore the Ph balance to your bladder and urinary tract.

Realize that there are some infections that are serious, such as the ones that are sexually transmitted. Always consult your doctor before trying to treat a UTI naturally so that you can rule out more serious infections.
