Poor Circulation, What Exactly Is It?

Poor circulation is the result of limited flow of blood to the hands, legs, the heart and other parts of the body as well. Usually it is caused by blockage in the veins and arteries because of a build up of a fatty substance that is commonly referred to as plaque. As the plaque builds up the walls of those veins and arteries constrict and harden. The normal flow of blood is interrupted and the result is poor circulation.

There are any number of conditions that can result from poor circulation. Some of the most common ones are high blood pressure, varicose veins, stroke, peripheral artery disease, kidney damage, aneurysms, arteriosclerosis, and phlebitis.

There are several treatment options for circulatory system problems that depend on what is causing them. Usually it involves a change in lifestyle as well as some form of medication whether it is pharmaceutical or naturopathic. One of the most radical changes should usually be dietary. It is important to eat a low-fat, high-fiber diet. Often people take supplements to ensure that they are getting sufficient fiber. Sometimes a low dose aspirin is also recommended because it is known to thin the blood which improves circulation and prevents clotting.

While you should always consult your doctor before taking any medications, natural or otherwise, there are herbal supplements that are known to improve circulation. Also, there a a number of anti-inflammatory and antioxidants that are often used effectively to help relieve swelling which promotes better circulation. Again, before you take any supplements for the first time, always consult your doctor first.
