Some interesting statistics came to light recently regarding statin drugs for lowering cholesterol and the mortality rate of people hospitalized with influenza. The correlation isn’t yet clear, but some noteworthy observations were made. A large group of people were studied who had been hospitalized with seasonal influenza. People who were taking statins were approximately fifty percent less likely to die from influenza than the people who weren’t taking cholesterol lowering medications. The statin drugs in question are the prescription drugs, Lescol, Crestor, Lipitor, Pravachol, Mevacor and Zocor.
While there may be a correlation between statin drugs and surviving influenza, it may be something else altogether. They did not do an analysis of how many patients were taking which of those drugs so there is no conclusion if any of them are more effective than others. But they did have other thoughts on the subject.
Perhaps it is the ability of those drugs to act as anti-inflammatories or immune system stimulants. If this is the case then we could take it one step further and hypothesize that antioxidants and nutraceutical cholesterol lowering supplements might be just as effective if not more so. Advocates of natural immune boosters believe, and have believed for a very long time, that natural nutrients and supplements are safer and more effective than their pharmaceutical counterparts.
The jury is still out, but the evidence is in. Whatever it is that fights cholesterol and reduces inflammation is also effective in fighting influenza. A good natural immune system booster might very well be what the doctor ordered.
